Em 1913, em Sheffield, Inglaterra, Harry Brearley investigava o desenvolvimento de novas ligas de a\u00e7o para uso em canos de armas. Eles variam de graus b\u00e1sicos como o 304 a super-austen\u00edticos como o 904L e graus com 6% de molibd\u00eanio.<\/p><p>Ao adicionar elementos como molibd\u00eanio, tit\u00e2nio ou cobre, as propriedades do a\u00e7o podem ser modificadas. Essas modifica\u00e7\u00f5es podem tornar o a\u00e7o adequado para aplica\u00e7\u00f5es em altas temperaturas ou aumentar a resist\u00eancia \u00e0 corros\u00e3o. A maioria dos a\u00e7os se torna quebradi\u00e7a em baixas temperaturas, mas o n\u00edquel no a\u00e7o inoxid\u00e1vel austen\u00edtico o torna adequado para aplica\u00e7\u00f5es em baixas temperaturas ou criog\u00eanicas.<\/p><p>Os a\u00e7os inoxid\u00e1veis austen\u00edticos s\u00e3o geralmente n\u00e3o magn\u00e9ticos. Eles n\u00e3o s\u00e3o capazes de endurecer por tratamento t\u00e9rmico. Os a\u00e7os inoxid\u00e1veis austen\u00edticos endurecem rapidamente com o trabalho a frio. cont\u00eam apenas cromo como principal elemento de liga. A quantidade de cromo presente varia de 10,5 a 18%.<\/p><p>S\u00e3o conhecidos por sua resist\u00eancia moderada \u00e0 corros\u00e3o e propriedades de fabrica\u00e7\u00e3o deficientes. As propriedades de fabrica\u00e7\u00e3o podem ser melhoradas por modifica\u00e7\u00f5es de liga e s\u00e3o satisfat\u00f3rias em graus como 434 e 444. A\u00e7os inoxid\u00e1veis ferr\u00edticos n\u00e3o podem ser endurecidos por tratamento t\u00e9rmico e s\u00e3o sempre usados em estado recozido.<\/p><p>A\u00e7os inoxid\u00e1veis ferr\u00edticos s\u00e3o magn\u00e9ticos.
